Chicago Tribune Traveling Cup

From 1930 to 1937 basketball teams from Latvia and Estonia contested for the prestigious Chicago Tribune Traveling Cup.

The Chicago Tribune had a bureau in Rīga, Latvia throughout the 1920’s and 1930’s. The permanent correspondent reported on Latvia, Estonia, Finland and occasionally the Soviet Union. I assume Lithuania was covered by a different correspondent.

In 1937 “Rīga Starts” won for the third time in a row: in accordance with the rules the cup became their possession. The Chicago Tribune did not offer a new cup. Latvia’s Railroad Association stepped in with a new traveling cup and expanded the rules to include Lithuania.

This seems like a fitting time to invite the Tribune to renew this tradition and offer a new cup.
